I don’t know about you but sometimes I find myself getting into a witchcraft rut. You know what I’m talking about. You’ve been doing the same thing in your practice week in and week out and things are starting to feel a bit stale. Maybe you’ve been using the same meditations for too long, or the same old spells are starting to lose their spark. Maybe this even goes on for so long that you get bored with your craft and start forgetting to practice entirely!
We’ve all been there and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Life is a big, messy, unpredictable shindig and sometimes witchcraft has to take a back seat for a while. When this happens, it’s easy to fall back on your old standards and practice in a way that is most comfortable and familiar to you! While this can be a great way to keep up your practice when life demands too much of you, it can also drive you straight into a bored rut if it runs on for too long.
So what do you do when you find yourself stuck in this witchy routine?
1. Find an inspiring witchy book and read a chapter every day
Sometimes inspiration can be hard to find but lucky for us there are tons of wonderful witchy books out there to give you a little kickstart back into the craft. Pick up an old favorite, ask a witchy friend for a recommendation, or check out one of my favorite books!
- Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
- The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein
- Crafting Magic With Pen And Ink by Susan Pesznecker
2. Cast a seven-day spell
If you’re finding yourself bored with the same old spells or you’ve fallen out of practice and haven’t been making time for your practice at all, give something a little more challenging a try. Seven-day spells are exactly what they sound like, they’re spells that are cast over the duration of seven days. I find that often these spells can pack a serious punch. They help you focus on your goal fiercely and can lead to some beautiful and unexpected magical breakthroughs.
3. Incorporate magic into your existing routine
Sometimes the best way to reignite your passion for magic is to make it simple and easy to access. Find a way to work it into your daily routine, try makeup magic, bath magic, stirring intentions into your morning coffee, or keeping a penny in your shoe to attract wealth! Whatever it is, make sure that it doesn’t disrupt your normal routine but rather blends seamlessly with it while adding a reinvigorated spark of magic back into your life.
4. Try something totally different from your normal routine
Wait, didn’t I just tell you to NOT disrupt your routine?
I did, but it’s not always that simple! Every witch will need something different so if the idea of keeping things too much the same makes you want to scream from boredom it may be time to do something completely different. If you’re a kitchen witch try techno witchcraft. If you normally work indoors, go do magic outside. If you usually work alone, find someone else to do magic with. If you like to work with a lot of tools, try mastering a stripped down, tool-free spell. Do whatever you need to do to get out of your comfort zone and shake things up!
5. Get outside
Take yourself outside for a while. Go for a walk or a hike, sit with a tree, swim in a natural body of water, do yoga in your backyard, just get outside. There’s nothing quite like being out in nature to clear out the cobwebs and reinvigorate your connection to your magic. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, sitting on your porch, working in a flowerbed or taking the dog for a stroll around the park might be enough to get you feeling less stuck and more inspired to work magic.
6. Give yourself a little witchy R&R
Everyone needs a little rest and relaxation, and if you’ve been busy or stressed enough that you’ve fallen into a rut in your craft you almost certainly need some time to recuperate. Use your self-care as an excuse to get witchy! Draw a bath, enchant a glass of wine, put on your favorite witchy music, light some candles, and let yourself relax and soak up the magic.
This is my personal favorite way to kick a magical rut. Often it’s the time when I feel the witchiest, I can reach out in my mind and feel magic spanning the entire globe, going back centuries and connecting me to other witches and other planes of existence. Sometimes I’ll do some astral traveling while I’m at it but if not it’s still one of the best ways for me to take stock of my energy and come back into balance. All you have to do is create a sacred, magic space to just be still in.
7. Hang out with a witchy friend
If you’re feeling uninspired, other witches in your social circle can be an amazing way to get the spark back in your magic. Go out to coffee to discuss your dreams, astral journeys, and spirit work. Pick a witchy book to read with your friends. Go to a local circle or pagan gathering. If you’re solitary or have trouble finding other witches nearby you might look into any local meet up groups or metaphysical shops, often these groups and places will have events that you can attend in order to meet people.
8. Learn a new skill
Tired of doing the same thing day in and day out? Then it’s time to kick boredom and learn something new. Every witch has a skill or interest that they’ve yet to explore, go get yourself a book on whatever it is and dig in. Need some ideas? Try reading up on alchemy, chaos magic, psychopomp work, astral travel, lucid dreaming, sex magic, or a new style of divination!
9. Write about it
Sometimes there are underlying problems blocking your magic. Whether they’re emotional, mental, or otherwise it can help to get your thoughts out on paper. Aim to reach a certain number of pages (I typically aim for three) and just write stream of consciousness about what you think might be causing your rut. You might be surprised what comes out when you start digging into it! When you read back over it, if you still aren’t quite clear on what may be to root of your lack of inspiration or if something, in particular, seems to be of importance you may want to try again. Pick something from the first batch of writing that sticks out and use that as the focus of your second round.
This is also a great way to overcome other magical hurdles! If you’re having trouble making a particular spell work, having trouble harnessing a technique or energy you’ve been working with or if you’re finding yourself suddenly attracting unusual spirits, people and situations, writing about it might help you illuminate the root cause.
10. Try something very, very small
If all else fails, do something small every day. The tiniest acts of magic can spark life back into your craft if they’re done with intention and mindfulness. If you’re too stressed or worn out to commit to something more involved then doing something tiny on a daily basis can help you foster your connection to your craft and rebuild the foundation that you need to find inspiration in your craft and really feel your magic. Two minutes of meditation, dropping an intention in a manifestation jar every morning, or lighting a candle for a simple candle spell may be all you need to reconnect and find that spark you’ve been missing. The important thing is that it’s small enough that it would feel silly to skip it!
